Achievements Release

The achievements of the Global Timber Index, the Blockchain-based Timber Traceability System, and other initiatives, will be showcased.

Global Timber Index (GTI)

The Global Timber Index (hereinafter referred to as GTI) is compiled based on the survey of leading timber enterprises from the main timber producing and consuming countries. The questionnaire is disseminated to the timber enterprises monthly and the Secretariat of Global Green Supply Chains Initiative (GGSC) organizes the experts to calculate and compile the GTI report, based on statistical analysis of the collected data and information.

With the support of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute of the Macao SAR (IPIM), the GTI platform has set up focal points in 10 pilot countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, and China.

ITTO Releases Special Report: Global Timber Index: Milestones and Achievements

The sustainable development of the forestry and timber industries needs support from global market data. The Global Timber Index (GTI) platform—supported by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute of the Macao SAR (IPIM), and implemented by the Global Green Supply Chains Initiative (GGSC)—has now been operating steadily for four years. By consolidating market intelligence from major timber-producing and timber-consuming countries worldwide, the platform serves as an important channel for industry information exchange and has become a powerful driver of legal and sustainable global timber trade.

On 16 June 2026, ITTO published on its official website a special report titled Global Timber Index: Milestones and Achievements, which systematically reviews the platform's key outcomes and development milestones over its four years of operation.

Blockchain-based Timber Traceability System (BTTS)

With the support of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute of the Macao Special Administrative Region (IPIM), the Blockchain-based Timber Traceability System aims to establish a traceability platform based on the China-Africa timber circulation chain, assisting stakeholders in the timber industry to achieve more cost-effective and efficient verification of legality and sustainability for timber and timber-based products. The project has identified critical business processes and international certification standards in the Africa-China timber circulation, successfully built an IT traceability platform that adapts to real-world business scenarios and international standards, and made it possible to document and assess the legality of the information of timber and timber-based products on the chain. Moreover, the project has selected and invited pilot units to test the platform, successfully verifying the feasibility and effectiveness of the system. In the future, BTTS will be compatible with more diverse business scenarios and certification standards, fostering collaboration among all parties to establish a fairer and more sustainable timber circulation system. Through these efforts, the project aims to build a robust infrastructure for the timber industry, with the aspiration of contributing to climate change mitigation and sustainable development.

Connecting Traceability System and Trading Platform-BTTS 2.0 for Promoting Legal & Sustainable Timber Trade

To establish a transparent and legal timber supply chain and promote legal and sustainable timber trade, the Macao SAR Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) jointly launched the Blockchain-based Timber Traceability System (BTTS) project, which is implemented and operated by the Secretariat of the Global Green Supply Chains Initiative (GGSC).

The simulation platform for the blockchain-based timber traceability system has completed its testing phase. Over the past year, the BTTS project has successfully transitioned from simulation platform to large-scale application, overcoming key technical challenges such as smart contracts implementation, privacy protection, and data security. BTTS has achieved full-chain traceability of timber products from the source to end user. This advancement has significantly contributed to promoting legal and sustainable timber use and trade.

Building on this foundation, the BTTS platform is now poised for strategic upgrade with the launch version 2.0 of BTTS. This new version will introduce an innovative "traceability + trading" dual-wheel drive model: ensuring that certified products are more tradable while guaranteeing that traded products meet certification standards. This approach will effectively promote global timber trade towards legality and sustainability, significantly enhance participation incentives for enterprises across the supply chain, and provide a robust digital solution for building a responsible global timber supply chain.
