 Background

Forests, as an important part of earth’s ecosystem, play an irreplaceable role in ecological balance, biodiversity and economic growth. Forestry industries provide large amounts of renewable, carbon-storing and degradable products which have fundamental significance for sustainable forestry development, carbon storage, eco-balancing and climate maintenance.

At present, sustainable management and utilization of global forests are facing severe challenges. Firstly, farming based deforestation due to livelihood issues have become the main cause of global forestry loss. Secondly, the decline in carbon storage and increment in pests and diseases due to tree’s maturity indicates excessive protection of forest resources and total prohibition of logging also violates the sustainable development of forest. Thirdly, social attitude of unconditional protection is also one of the important reasons that restrict forestry sustainable development. Before addressing this entrenched misconception that logging equals deforestation, scientific concept of sustainable development is difficult to promote. Fourthly, insufficient policy compensation in forestry industry also results in the lack of enterprises’ enthusiasm in sustainable management which also restrict the development of forests.

Youth group, who have intellect, curiosity and bravery, should provide insights and strategies for sustainable development of global forestry. Therefore, How to leverage the role and value of youth, correctly guide young people in shaping the future of each country's economy and society, and strive to promote the enhancement of global public awareness of sustainable development are important issues in forestry. Based on this, Global Green Supply Chain of Forest Products (Macao) Federation, together with Secretariat of the Global Green Supply Chains Initiative (GGSC), and Zhejiang University (Ninghai) Joint Research Center for Bio-based Materials and Carbon Neutral Development” co-organized the “Global Forestry Youth Leadership Workshop: Wood and Bamboo Sustainable Buildings”, aiming to enhance the international corporation and explore the feasible plan in the field of forestry industry. This workshop will also give full play to the leadership of youth group and enhance their ability to promote the economic, social, and environmental benefits of forestry and the balanced development of urban and rural construction.

 Call for Papers

On the occasion of the “Global Legal and Sustainable Timber Forum (GLSTF)” on 2024.9.11 to 2024.9.12, this workshop will be held at the same time for the purpose of gathering the wisdom and strength of young people in forestry field and exploring the sustainable development of global forestry and construction, The workshop sincerely welcome young scholars, graduate students and business elites to submit papers and to attend the workshop, sharing scientific research and engineering innovations. The workshop covers the key topics, but not limited to, timber and bamboo resources, carbon footprint, material properties, structural design and performance, architectural design, environment impact, sustainable manufacture and industry, etc. The workshop presentations include the format of oral reports and posters. A collection of papers will be published after the workshop.
